Islamabad: It has been 31 years since the death of prominent Urdu poet Parveen Shakir. Parveen Shakir, a modern-day poet, needed no introduction. When she started writing poetry, the names of female poets like Ada Jafri, Fehmida Riaz, Shabnam Shakeel, and Kishore Naheed were resounding. Parveen Shakir made a distinct mark in poetry and literature through her unique style of expression and individual style.
When her first poetry collection ‘Khusboo’ came out, its fragrance spread everywhere in the world of literature. Due to her romantic style in poetry, she gained immense popularity among the new generation. Parveen Shakir expressed feminine emotions in a unique way and the thinking of a modern and conscious girl is prominent in her poetry.
She beautifully used universal metaphors such as fragrance, flowers, spring, weather, wind, sea and many others in her poetry. Along with poetry, she proved to be a successful woman in practical life as well and held important administrative positions. Due to her attractive personality and temperament, she was dear to everyone in her circle of friends. With her death, Urdu literature lost a poet who expressed herself in an emotional and romantic manner.
Poet Parveen Shakir died in a traffic accident in Islamabad on December 24, 1994, at the age of only 42.
